ISTDP Core Training designed for the NHS

The inspiration for this training programme came from the work of David Malan who had a dream of making ISTDP widely available through the NHS.

This three year course was developed to train NHS clinicians in ISTDP, equipping them to deliver treatment in complex public-health settings. This training is provided in collaboration with Dr Allan Abbass, incorporating the Halifax annual online Immersion course into the overall learning programme.

The training group meets over five blocks per year for three years. Each training block consists of a seminar, video teaching material, and supervision. Trainees are required to bring video-tape of clinical sessions for their supervision.

The majority of the teaching is provided by Dr Leo Russell with additional guest presenters from across the ISTDP community. Trainees are encouraged to develop peer support meetings to enhance the learning process. Teaching blocks are planned to avoid school holiday periods where possible to make it easier for colleagues to attend who have family commitments. Each year there is also an optional top-up seminar during the summer. The curriculum is based on well-established core principles of ISTDP.
